Smarter-Balanced Assessment:

ISLLC Standard 4:  An education leader promotes the success of every student by collaborating with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.

Video One:

Please watch the introduction video below and take a look at the portfolio example provided...

Picture
Hi there, 8th grade. My name is Dr. Leonard. I am the resource teacher for the eighth grade team. I am here to help you work with your teachers to start the work towards your success for this year’s Smarter Balanced Test.

Four times a week, during home base, we will begin steps to help you gain the skills you need to properly take a test. We will build a portfolio for your exam that will be kept in home base for you. In the videos, we will work to analyze some possible questions that you may come across during the exam. We are working to do this so that they do not seem so difficult when you may see similar questions on your exam. Finally, the 8th grade team will provide you will an online resource, that you can refer back to, when it comes time to study prior to the exam. First things first, let’s build a portfolio for you to use and refer to during each of these study sessions.

On your folder, find the tab at the top, this is where you will place your full name. At the top of your folder, please place the title for this portfolio..."Smarter-Balanced Assessment". Remember, we will be using the covers of the portfolio to track the dates and topics we work on during portfolio days. This information will become data that the team can use to individualize your learning. Inside your portfolio, you will date, put your name on, and keep track of everything you work on during the mini lessons.

Each afternoon, you will watch a snippet of a video that takes you through activities. These activities are constructed to help you work through and build up the skills needed to successfully answer various test questions you might find on the test. Tomorrow, we will begin work to deconstruct skills you will need to conquer your first mathematics test question for the assessment.

Video Two (Math):

Please watch the video below showing a tessellation activity about reflection...

Don't forget to put the date that you completed this activity on the outside of your portfolio. Additionally, you want to put the topic of the activity. This activity was about tessellation and the concept of reflection.

To do this activity properly, you will need:
  • A piece of plain, white paper
  • A pencil
  • Your Smarter-Balanced Portfolio
Hi there, 8th grade. My name is Dr. Leonard. Today, we will begin work to build your skills needed to successfully answer questions on the Mathematics section of the Smarter-balanced Test. We will be looking at the following topics to provide you with the prior knowledge needed to answer the first practice question:
  • Types of Tessellation (Rotation, Translation, Reflection)
  • Reflecting across the x/y axis
  • Using a Coordinating Plane
  • Using Integers on a Coordinating Plane
  • Plotting Points on a Coordinating Plane
First, let’s do a super quick art project. For this project, you will need a plain piece of paper and a pencil. I am going to show you a trick that can help you move a triangle from one place onto another without re-drawing it. Instead, we will reflect the triangle across the paper. Take a look:

First, draw a small triangle at the far corner of your white piece of paper. Second, darken the lines of the triangle you just drew. Fold the ends of your paper together. Turn your paper on the back and trace over the triangle you drew. Make sure to press hard enough for the graphite to transfer the image, but not hard enough to break the tip of your pencil.

Open your paper back up. You should see a new triangle in the other corner of your paper. Trace over the lines of that triangle. Make sure the lines are dark. Now fold your paper again, but long ways. Turn your paper on the back and trace over the triangle you drew. Make sure to press hard enough for the graphite to transfer the image, but not hard enough to break the tip of your pencil.

Open your paper back up. You should see a new triangle in the other corner of your paper. When you open the paper back up, you will see three of the same triangles. One triangle is in each corner. This is called reflection. Notice, the images are “mirrors” of each other. You will need to have an understanding of the “mirroring” concept when you tackle the Smarter-Balanced problem we are going to build up to in a few weeks. Below, you will find a quick video explaining the types of tessellation.

Video Three (ELA) SQRRR:  Using Key Ideas and Details Notes

Materials Needed:
  • Video Three (ELA)
  • Pencil
  • Notebook Paper
  • Smarter-balanced Portfolio as per Student
  • The bolded list of "things to consider" below. This list is located below the NxGen objectives. So, keep scrolling please. This list will need to be written down on notebook paper after watching the video. This list will become "Notes". Students will place these notes in their portfolios for safe keeping.
During the Smarter-balanced assessment, you may be asked to use key ideas and details in a passage to answer questions. There are several skills that you will need to have in place in order to successfully answer these types of questions. These skills are reflected in the following WVDE NxGen ELA Objective for 8th grade:
  • ELA.8.R.C1.5
Determine a central idea of an informational text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective
summary of the text. (CCSS RI.8.2)

Prior to taking your assessment, you will need to become proficient at each of the objectives presented above. Let’s start building the skills you will need for to be successful.
A snippet of the story “White Fang” will be read to you, while you read along. A question will follow the reading of the passage. There are several skills you will need and procedures you will need follow to correctly answer the question. These skills can be lumped under the SQRRR Method. Considering the following "Notes" regarding the SQRRR Method before you read the selection and tackle your question:
  • SURVEY
  • QUESTION
  • READ
  • RECITE
  • REVIEW

Please make sure to write the five components listed above down on a sheet of notebook paper. After listening to the video, write down what you learned about each component of the SQRRR Method. Make sure you write neatly. Place these “notes” in your smarter-balanced portfolio. On the outside of your folder, place the date and the topic. The topic for this video is “SQRRR:  Using Key Ideas and Details” notes. Make sure to hand your portfolios to your teacher prior to leaving for the day. Thank you.

Video Four (ELA) "White Fang" Read Along:

For this video, the teacher will pass out a snippet of a story. Follow along as we read it with you. Use your "notes" from Video Three. Read the selection and question again quietly. Imagine what is taking place in the story as you read it. Make notes for yourself in the "snow" or margins of your selection. Determine the sequence of events while you read. Please underline, circle, or highlight the words you are unfamiliar with. Use context clues to help you find the evidence needed to correctly answer the question. Circle the best answer to the question. Your teacher will discuss the question with the group. Put your name on the selection. Place the selection, along with your video three notes, in your portfolio. On the front of your portfolio place the date and topic of this mini lesson. The topic is "White Fang" read along. Please make sure to pass in your portfolio to your teacher before leaving. Thanks.
Materials Needed:
  • Pencil
  • "White Fang" Passage
